What is ‘Myo’?

Essentially this form of massage therapy is the most specialised, as the focus is not just on the experience
of the treatment, but the diagnosis of symptoms, treatment of the cause and prescription of exercises to avoid
re-injury/condition exacerbation which impair movement and mobility.

How does ‘Myo’ work?

Myofascial pain can be described as pain or dysfunction caused by muscle (myo) or fascia (connective tissue). Myofascial pain is often described by the patient as a 'deep ache', 'tightness' or 'tenderness' in an area, it may be experienced locally or it may radiate to areas away from the original source. Other symptoms may also be experienced as a result of trigger points within the muscles such as decreased range of motion, stiffness, fatigue, weakness and tingling or numbness.

A myotherapist employs various techniques to restore and maintain the normal integrity of the soft tissue structure (muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia) of the human body. The therapist will use deep tissue manipulations, trigger
point therapy, myofascial releases, dry needling and cupping to release blockages, taut bands, knots and sore spots.

How can Myo help?

The benefits of Myotherapy are widespread, however the list below shows a small number of conditions which are commonly treated with the method:

• Chronic back pain
• Stiff neck
• Headaches
• Shoulder pain
• Lateral Epicondylitis (Tennis elbow).
• Hand and finger numbness and tingling

• ITB friction syndrome
• Sciatic pain
• Chronic knee pain
• Sprained ankle
• 'Shin Splints'
• Foot pain

• Chronic Overuse Syndrome (Wrist/elbow)
• Loss of mobility due to arthritis
• Sports/Dance specific injuries/impediments
• General poor posture
• Changes to the body during pregnancy
• Health care rebates

Myotherapy treatment is covered under the ancillary or extras cover of most major health insurers. Please check with
your health fund to ensure that this is included in your extras cover. Patients are required to pay in full at the time of the appointment and seek rebate through individual providers.

Work Cover

Myotherapy treatment is partially covered with work cover. However, you will require a doctor's referral, so let your GP know that you want to consult one of our myotherapists and they will provide you with the necessary paperwork. When you book please state that you wish to go though Work Cover. Patients are required to pay in full at the time of the appointment and seek rebate through individual providers.

A team approach to the body

The Movement Refinery is by no means a ‘one-stop shop’. Nonetheless, we believe that for the best example of physical facility a combined approach of Myotherapy and Pilates/Gyrotonic can not only keep issues at bay, but avoid them all together.

With your consent of course, your teacher and therapist will discuss their combined goals, treatment plans and protocols, timelines of treatment and progress expectations. We will meet at regular intervals to keep up to date and to ensure progress.

Block bookings to secure your progress and get ‘pain-free’ quicker

The Movement Refinery Myotherapy will offer pre-paid treatment blocks (as we do with Gyrotonic and Pilates) to help you heal faster and more economically. Not only will you save on treatment costs by purchasing five sessions in advance, you will also be able to (where possible) reserve the same appointment time for your treatments. At your initial session with Cameron you can nominate your desired time over the length of the payment block to help ease diary confusion.
